Bon Jour, fine subscribers!
I thought you might enjoy taking one of my buying trips with me, so to speak. In fact, each time I write this column, you will come with me to search the corners of the few untouched attics there are left in Pennsylvania!
I recently was called to Hazelton, PA, to see the clothing and accessories of a former model from the 1940's. As I salivated, the son of the woman (I am not at liberty to divulge her name) began to tell me that she had over100 hats, purses, clothing and jewelry, ALL from the 1940's, many from when she modeled. WELL! After I mopped up the floor underneath the phone, I hopped in my car and drove over there as fast as my car could go, without being pulled over, of course!
When I arrived, I was led into an "Elvis-ized" living room, complete with kidney shaped black and gold couch, and the
proverbial string picture on the wall (pink French poodles that lit up!). Can you picture the fake hot pink and purple pillows on the couch, the red shag carpeting, the giant feather creation in the vase on the table? I almost thought I had gotten lost and ended up in Sophie's Tiki Lounge!
I was led up to the second floor, and in the first bedroom, there were floor to ceiling hatboxes. The master bedroom had 2 12-foot long shelves in each closet, and each was lined with hats - not fabulous 1940's hats - but Dr.Suess does the Kentucky Derby hats - 1950's! I have never seen so many hats - 95 in all! And the clothing was beautiful - she was a tailor as well, and made many beautiful pieces of clothing. The purses, well we can call these "Lilly Pulitzer does Las Vegas". An entire bureau full of jewels was also awaiting my expertise. Of course, I bought it ALL!
And now, dear subscribers, you will be the first to see these wonders as we gradually post them in the online store. Here are a few teaser photos. You can click on the What the Cat Dragged In link to see these and more.
We also netted a nest of 4" spike heeled mules in every style and color - reminds me of the movie "Far from Heaven" - all size 8 ˝!
