Miss Kitty's Mailbox
Email Miss Kitty Dear valued subscribers:

Here, as promised is the next installment of tips on caring for your Vintage Clothing:

  1. Fold sweaters and delicate lace items carefully for storage- do not use hangers

Ever put on a sweater and find that you have 4 shoulders? Or a lace dress from the 20's that no longer HAS any shoulders? Fold, don't hang, these items.

  2. Hats can be stuff with acid-free paper, and stored in trunks or boxes

Hats hold up quite well, and using acid free paper to stuff and loosely wrap will keep them nice for another 100 years. Store in a cool, dry place. Alternatively, displaying them in an area where the sun won't hit them is also acceptable.

  3. Fur coats should be dressed every few years and stored in a cedar closet or cool dry place- not the attic or the basement!

Fur needs a cool environment. Check with a furrier for frequency of dressing to keep your fur in tip-top shape.

  4. Never iron velvet- steam from the inside and brush as you go.

Velvet has a thick nap that can be ruined by pressing with an iron. Dry Cleaner is my first choice. If you must do it yourself, follow instructions as above.

  5. Always steam rayon on the inside- otherwise shiny spots will appear.

Rayon is another tricky fabric. You, again, should let a dry cleaner do it. But if you insist on doing it yourself, steaming from the inside while pulling fabric slightly taut will give it a flawless finish.

Vintage Adventures
Bon Jour, fine subscribers!

Well, fellow vintage lovers, it was a bust. What, you say, was a bust? It was the other Hazelton Estate - the sister of the one who owned the fabulous hats and jewelry! I asked a friend to come with me to help with all the goodies I had hoped to score, but as we walked in to the conservative, well maintained home, I had a feeling it was not going to fly. But ever the optimistic one, I forged ahead! I noted a photograph of the woman to whom these things had belonged, and her husband quietly, but almost protestingly, that the two women were like night and day. THAT'S when I knew it was over! I did buy a few things, but they were not at all exciting. You have to kiss a lot of frogs........

By the way, I promised to tell you one of my whopper tales about a fabulous find. However , dear readers, I didn't get any from YOU! Now, before I tell you anything, I need at least 10 stories to share in the next newsletter. The best will be printed, and those people will get a gift from Miss Kitty! So----start your pen-gines!

Until next time....
Have a purr-fect day,
Miss Kitty

Mews You Can Use
Mews You Can Use We will be exhibiting at The Manhattan Vintage Show April 25th and 26th. Click here to see details: http://www.manhattanvintage.com.

If you plan to attend, email me and I will send you a card worth $5 off the $20 entry fee. Here is some exciting information about this fabulous show, By Jeannette Park:

Fashion Wire Daily NY April 7, 2003 - Although the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea is a popular space for numerous sample sales every year, the space holds no event more heralded and anticipated than the quarterly Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show. Regarded as the exhibition where top designers get inspiration for future collections, this is an opportunity for the average Jane to get a peek at the hottest trends of the season.

But these aren't your ordinary flea market finds. From beautifully constructed gowns from the last century to exquisite one-of-a-kind jewelry, browsers will become buyers of unique and timeless styles. Included in this spring's vintage trends are: cocktail dresses with sunglasses, halter tops, pink and Easter egg shade jackets, trim oriental jackets over jersey dresses, and stripes. Polka dots will also make a comeback, similar to the looks seen at Donna Karan's and Marc Jacobs' spring shows.

For those women who are shoe fanatics (and who isn't?), a special exhibition, "In Step: Three Hundred Years of Shoes," will take center stage at the vintage clothing show. Displaying photos and pieces celebrating three centuries of footwear, there will be plenty of sandals, boots, high heels, sneakers and wedgies on hand to make anyone cry in excitement.

Claire Danes, Molly Sims, Patti Hansen and Lorraine Bracco have been seen hunting out vintage goods at past clothing shows. And with nearly 60 nationally-recognized dealers at the April 25 and 26 shows, this season's dealer spotlights include designer and traditional retro pieces from Right to the Moon Alice that have been used in numerous films; Barbara Kennedy's cotton day dresses from the 1950's and her collection of hankies and funky linens; and Nancy Gewirz's vintage sportswear and textiles for Antique Textile Resource. Such notable New York vintage boutiques as Decades and What Comes Around Goes Around will feature their wares as well. The Cats Pajamas of Williamsport Pennsylvania will bring fabulous finds as well. The Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show will be held Friday, April 25th from 1pm-7pm and Saturday, April 26th from 10am-6pm at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th St., NYC. Admission is $20. For more information, visit www.manhattanvintage.com.

There will be a feature on the CBS morning show, on Wednesday, April 23. See you at the show!
